Chemo #5

Monday, July 11

I must admit that I am not excited about tomorrow’s appointment. Perhaps,it is because:

  • Physical fatigue has been the hallmark of my last few weeks and I can only expect more after tomorrow’s treatment.
  • My continued weight gain, loss of strength and diminishing conditioning is extremely disheartening.
  • Experience predicts ugly emotional swings & a humiliating cognitive fog.

However, I am thrilled as I anticipate:

  • Another merciless bombardment of those uninvited cancer cells.
  • A long weekend of beach time with two of the Goelz families.
  • Two happy visits with Carter.
  • The prospect of perhaps only one more treatment.

  1. Mike, You told me once “my friends don’t let me drink coffee”, referring to your already enviably high energy . Maybe you can rethink that at times, or maybe Yerba mate. As for cognitive fog, I’m sure it’s not fun but it’s a place where some of us have been all our lives, and at least yours goes away ! Hang in there my friend, thinking of you every day.

  2. Mike—
OK, today you’re one day past your next-to-last chemo treatment of the first phase. You are kicking this thing’s ass!! I see you in front of me cycling the hills in the Gulf Islands, leaving me whimpering, I visualize you crossing the Rockies repeatedly, (how many times on that last cycle across the US?), leveling the mountains. We’re on our next to the last run of the day at Willamette Pass, on “Good Time Charlie”, my thighs ache as you jet ahead of me, covering me in snowdust. You’ve got incredible deep inner strength that you’re tapped into as you beat this. (And of course, you’re the guy who doesn’t need coffee). I’m sending you white light, seeing you finish this phase. Keep it up!
    Much Love, Joseph

  3. Thinking of you as you rest easy these next few days with the sand at your feet. Whoa…what a trip Julia had!!! She talked nonstop about her Eugene visit for over 2 hours straight. We could tell by the stories and laughs what a wonderful visit she had with you and the gang. She said her face still hurts from smiling so much. I can’t thank you and Laurie enough for welcoming her into your home and spending special moments with her. She truly enjoyed your hikes, talks, cherry picking, and the country faire….she was amazed at your endurance, lasting all day! She is so jazzed about planning the family reunion with you and Orion. Thanks for being the great role model you are and a true inspiration!!

  4. Tough road, temporary conditions – but excellent fight! Great that you’re keeping your eye on the prize. You’ll be clearer and more cogent very soon. Looking forward to hanging with you in only one month and on the other side of chemo treatments.

  5. Thinking of you Mike. Everyday. Just breathe. Then take another breath. Then another. One day blends into the next. You are getting through this.

    Hugs to you and Laurie.
    Love to you both.
    David
